A Breakfast for Pigs - Holy Guacamole!

Our wessex saddleback cross pigs are spoilt rotten. We collect the turfings from our local fruit and vege shops to supplement their diet and give them variety other than their piggie mix. It gives our fruiterer an outlet to reduce their waste and the turfings not only get used up feeding pigs, but processed into manure for our garden. It is a win-win-win situation.

Today's piggie breakfast consisted of blood plums, clingstone peaches, tomatoes, cherries, strawberries, nectarines and one kiwi fruit. Don and Hamelot go crazy over fruit, and today was no exception. Don, the little ´un was particularly taken with the tomatoes. Odd choice, I would have said in the face of the rest of the fruit platter, but there you go. Hamelot, on the other hand has a particular penchant for avocado. Between their likes they could rustle up a pretty decent guacamole. Who can second guess a piggy palate?

  1. It is one of the advantages of living close to your animals that you get to know their personalities, likes and dislikes. Bubba our girl goat loves fruit, Bazza isn't that enamoured. They definitely have very different personalities too. I applaud your raising of your own pork and I am glad the piggies are being treated soooo well.

  2. I think they look so happy. They certainly are handsome chaps. As happy as ......
I agree with Hazel about raising your own pork - if that is your purpose. Personally I only ever buy free range pork even though it is much more $$. We have thought about having our own pigs, but don't know that I could follow through with the eating part.

  3. Yes, these little piggies are destined for the freezer. It is all a part of reducing our food miles, knowing how our produce is raised, kept and fed, and that goes for the fruit and vegies as well.

  5. Avocado is certainly poisonous to quite a few animals particularly dogs and birds but we've not been able to find any credible evidence that avocado flesh is poisonous to pigs.

They have used avocado flesh as a feed supplement to pigs in Mexico without adverse effects. There is a study out there in internet land about this.

The fungicidal toxin Persin which is the nasty bit is only present the leaves, skin, bark and seeds and not in the flesh for most avocado varieties.

I think feeding the pigs avocados in large doses is probably not a good idea.
